Our story

How Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park came to be and the people behind its care today.

From fortress to national park

After the military ceased to use the fortress in the 19th century, the site fell into
disrepair. In 1965, the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park Society was founded as a
voluntary, non-profit organisation to preserve and promote the site. Through decades of
restoration work, advocacy, and partnership with the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis,
the fortress was stabilised, key structures were repaired, and the museum and visitor
experience were developed.

UNESCO World Heritage

In 1999, Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park was inscribed on the UNESCO World
Heritage List. This recognition affirmed the site’s outstanding universal value and
committed the Society and the nation to its long-term protection. Today the park is
managed by the Society on behalf of the Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis.

The people behind the park

The Society is run by a Council of Management elected by members, with day-to-day
operations led by the General Manager, Park Manager, and staff. Volunteers and members
also play a vital role. Together they ensure that Brimstone Hill remains a living place
of history and a destination for visitors from around the world. Learn more about
